Kelsey Garegnani - Protecting Sacred Sites on Public Land
I found this reading in the process of looking for articles to help in my research for my paper. The most interesting part of this article was the idea ad importance of sacred sites in the preservation of culture. This is demonstrated pretty easily within Native American culture especially. Their way of life is threatened by the bombardment of modern conveniences. These conveniences seem just that, convenient, but they take away from the slower pace of life that made for incorporation of more traditions into every day life. Now, many traditions are highly ceremonial and the smaller ones have just died away. Its a shame that their culture has taken such a toll over the years. Today, having the chance to reincorporate traditions through the protection of sacred sites has created a large stir. Many Native Americans have risen up to try to put in a say on the use and protection of public lands, especially those most important to them. Having such a distinct culture i feel makes that disappearance of traditions and rituals pretty obvious. With the many cultures in the US, though, many have slowly let traditions slip away almost unnoticeably.
