Pilgrim at Tinker Creek: “Live water heals memories.”
In the chapter, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, of Dillard’s book, she states that “Live water heals memories.” This line immediately jumped out at me as I have always felt that the being near the water, especially the ocean, heals any pain and relieves stress in my life. The steady beat of the moving water gives you a great sense of well-being as you embrace its energy and nature. You begin to feel as though you’re breathing in new life and freeing yourself from all emotional discomforts. The oceans, lakes, and rivers give you a feeling of inter-connection with nature. Just a few months ago, while dealing with a lot of pain and hurtful events in my life, I made a trip down to the Outer Banks with a few close friends from back home. Being down there flooded my mind with a lot of memories—some good and some not so good. One night I decided to take a walk on the beach and something about hearing the rolling waves and feeling the cool breeze and cool sand began to heal me and it brought so much relief on my heart. I strongly agree with Dillard that water heals memories—even the more painful ones that take more time.

You are right about the 'healing' nature of water. We live two minutes from the ocean on an island in the Caribbean. We are here for my job, and my wife is a sentient creature who detects the angst of a very sick society in this small country. She does not like being here at all.
And yet when everything seems overwhelming to her, we go for a walk on the beach -- an incredibly beautiful beach, and its healing and soothing qualities immediately become evident. The water provides peace of mind for both of us.
