Marie Steinheiser: Outside Reading #2

In the book "A White Heron" the boy seems dangerous and a threat to the beautiful, innocent young girl. The boy from the city is capable of disturbing the young girls thoughts of nature and peace. The author chooses to refer to the boy as the "enemy." This bold statement is representitive of what natures embracers see of civilization. Modern technology is a threat to nature. Trees being cut down, land being taken away for hotels and houses, and animals homes being taken away for the sake of our pleasures in large homes and shopping centers. In a sense, our need for growing civilization is the enemy to nature. If we take our modernization too far, there will be no more nature left. No place to escape the caos of the world we have come to know. However, it does not have to be that way. We can find a balance in modern times and nature.
