Marie Steinheiser: the Unsettling of america #1
In Berry's book "The Unsettling of America," he argues that adequate farming is both a spiritual discipline and a cultural development. Over generations, farming has become a mass production, rather than a small town production. This expansion has taken the love out of the land and farming. Farmers once took much pride in what they did, but in our modern time, farming has become a necessity to please the large population. It is no longer a relationship between the farmer and the land, where the farmer cherishes the land he looks over. This loss of feeling for the land is a common occurence in our time. In present times, our society finds less reasons to spend out tending to land and enjoying nature. There is less pride in just the feeling of taking part in nature. Now there is much more purpose behind tending land. It is all about the mass production of crops. This loss of nature and man is not just in farming, but all aspects of man interacting with nature.
