Marie Steinheiser: Three #1

In Dillard's Pilgrim, she expresses what she personally sees when she looks at nature. She not only sees it as beautiful, but also wasteful. The word beautiful is a word we often hear when speaking about nature, but wasteful is not as common. To Dillard, nature is wasteful in the fact that it throws away leaves and life. It is true once you think about it. As seasons change, leaves come and go. The trees shed their leaves as if throwing them away. What is the purpose behind this? During fall they look as if they are dead. However, once Spring time comes, flowers blossom and the wilderness once again flourishes. To me, Spring time is far more beautiful than Fall. I personally cannot find the beauty in fall or winter. The wilderness looks bare and even more unwelcoming to me. This is the nature I have come to know.
