Henry David Thoreau is, to me, one of the brightest individuals to have lived on this Earth. I read Walden for a philosophy class this semester and was very interested in his philosophies. He wasn’t trying to preach that everybody should live the way he lived, but to live the way you want to live, and what makes you happy, regardless of what society says about it. I enjoy this thought very much because I don’t want to be unhappy when I’m forty years old, I want to love life just as much as I do not, probably even more so. It’s not that Thoreau disappeared either, he made his trips to the market every week to see what was new, and also had visitors come to the house he built on Walden Pond to see the way he lived, which I’m positive they were all jealous of, except for the fact that Thoreau had no significant other, but unlike myself that is the way he preferred it. He wanted to ‘unclutter’ his life with all the things that he believed he needed not. If I had the chance to build my own house in the wilderness away from society, I would definitely jump at the chance in a heartbeat.
