Kelley Brown- Out on the Noland Trail #1

The Noland Trail is filled with nature, tranquility, adventure, and mystery. I love being in and surrounded by nature and having the ability to use my senses—smelling, hearing, touching, seeing, etc to take in the beauty that God has created and given to us. I felt such a sense of tranquility and peace when we were out on the trail. This is something that I really needed to quiet my heart and mind and just listen to what was going on around me, because I am so used to constantly running around busily on campus and with life in general.

It was very interesting seeing all of the different types of plants and having all the aromas blend together for an extraordinary, fresh smell—except in a couple places near the edge of the lake. The area was still except for the frequent runner, walker, or small animal rustling in the leaves. I also really enjoyed seeing the differences in naturally produced plants and domestic ones and having the realization that the Noland Trail has been constantly changing and developing, because there used to be houses along the trail.

From everything to sight to smells to sounds of the nature and the earth around us—it works perfectly together. It is so freeing to have this place of nature to be able to come and escape from the fast-paced everyday life of Newport News. We need to make sure that we protect the area that we have been given so that we can continue to enjoy the beauty and so that future generations can enjoy it as well.
