Megan Nisbet: Berry-A Continuous Harmony #2

"I am one/Who eats his breakfast,/Gazing at the morning-glories./Over my legs,/Stretched out at ease,/The billowing clouds./Spring departs,/Trembling, in the grasses/Of the fields." (25-26)

I really enjoyed the simplicity of this poem, and the thought it sparked in me. In my second semester of my freshman year, I had to be to work at 6am every Friday. I hate waking up early, so this was really rough for me. However, when I left the dorm at 5:55 to walk from York East to the Student Union, I really enjoyed how the world felt at that time of the day. There were only a few students every once in a while (I thought that the ones that were up were crazy), so everything was very quiet, and it was like it was only me in the world. I really enjoyed this calm feeling, and the feeling of the early morning, cold air on my face. I usually wasn't actually awake until I walked outside. The next few paragraphs say that haiku is supposed to open your mind to nature, and make you want to go visit it. I really believe this, because this poem made me want to go outside in the sunshine and just experience nature in the springtime. I also enjoy a good breakfast, but I only have time to eat a few pieces of toast on the drive to school in the morning, so I would love to have a good, hearty breakfast outside on my back patio on a warm spring morning with the birds singing! How comforting!!
