Marie Steinheiser: The Practice of the Wild #1

The most captivating essay in Gary Snyders book is "The Place, the Region, and the Commons." He mentions not only domains in the United States, but also in Japan, England, and China. It is broughten to our attention the ability of civilization to ruin natural sights. Population growth is a huge downfall to the preservation of nature. As our population grows, the wilderness is torn apart. We our selfish in our ways. We take into account our needs of the land around us, but often forget about the creatures that we share this world with. Not only are the animals harmed, but the wild that we cherish, only when convenient to us. We often have the mentality that this world is ours to do with it that we so choose to. However, we our not the only ones inhabiting this land. The animals and plants around us contribute to our life as much as other human beings. The commons as Snyders explains as the contract we have with the natural system. We often break this contract in the expansion of our unnecessary creations.
