kelsey Garegnani - Into the wild

In into the wild, the main character goes into the wilderness seeking himself but ends up dying.  While a really is simplified that the premiss reminds me of what i was discussing earlier on Annie Dillard's book Three about our underestimation of nature.  We idealize it to be the perfect altered state in the world where we can learn and be changed by its wonders.  In our idealization we do not recognize the danger, roughness, and almost merciless environment nature holds.  The ruthlessness of action consequence leave no room for mercy, fairness, and second chances.  McCandles learned that the hard way though by having to die.  Though his experience ended in death his experience with nature and the coarseness of the wild as well as the beauty and perfection of it.
