when reading Anne dillards story of the spirit thing that tried to kill her in her room i thought she was crazy.  The point which she makes though, is that there is the external world of reason and the internal world of fiction and unknown which are separated by the thin line of decision.  I found this interesting since i too as a child made up stories in my head and while i did not believe them as she did, i received just as much pleasure from being able to jump into whichever side i wanted.  The outside world, and nature itself, send us messages through our interaction with it.  But we can do with those messages as we chose.  We can listen to what nature has to say, and either reason through the messages or manipulate the evidence within our imagination.  I think both are will teach you interesting things both about nature and yourself. One thing C.S. lewis mentioned in his book, Three Loves, was that nature cannot teach you anything you do not already know but can demonstrate or reinforce what you do know of.  This would show how both imagination and reason can be used together to create better understanding through nature.  Imagination to see the possibilities within nature and what you already know and mingle them in your head.  Reason comes in by linking them together and creating new ideas and reinforcing old ones through logic.
