Eric Kennedy Reflections on Berry (The Unsettling of America) #1
In reading the chapter entitled The Use of Energy I found the statement that to use energy is “… to at once live and to die.” And I thought that this was an awesome realization. Now I know Berry is probably not the first to come to this conclusion but I thought about a question, who among us do not realize the implication of this statement?
This statement is one of importance and we should all realize its implication and the ramifications of our actions while we are on this planet. The cost of gas is what? $3.30 ish a gallon? GOOOD GRACIOUS! That is way too much money. The reason behind this is that we are so dependent on a resource that is slowly dwindling and also the whole war thing. But aside from the war, this resource is declining because of our dependence on it and why don’t we have an alternative yet? There are plenty of reasources we could go to if we just spent the time and effort to do so. Also going back to the statement Berry made, we all need to look back to what we eat and realize that something had to die in order for us to be able to eat whatever it is we are eating, and just eat with a little more reverence to that being that passed so that we could continue to live. It would be a little weird to mourn over the being but I would just maybe say to be a little more aware of this relationship, and maybe throw away less food.
