Eric Kennedy My Choice Blog #1

Eric Kennedy My Choice Blog #1

For this blog that I get to choose a topic, I want to talk about the importance of being in nature to me.

First off, I am an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and I have been camping/hiking/etc since I was in kindergarten. My dad’s an eagle too and I feel like I got my affinity for nature from him and I thank him for it. Nature for me has always had a spiritual aspect to because I just feel at peace while I am camping/hiking/etc. In 2006 I went to Seattle with my family and my dad, my brother and I attempted to climb Mt. Rainer. This trip was astounding. Although the weather was deplorable at best, we still managed to get within a reasonable distance to camp Muier, which is the base camp for those attempting to reach the summit. As we sat outside of our tent when the weather cleared up eating our freeze dried meals my dad said to us, “look around boys, this is God’s country.” And it truly was, the climbers had dwindled and there was no one around and you could see all the way down to the visitor’s station. There was nothing else that really looked as though humans had touched it. Up at 11,500 ft. there was little I could do but be amazed. This is why I love nature; it takes my breath away and with it, my worries and concerns.
