Marie Steinheiser: Outside Reading #1
In Sarah Orne Jewett's book "A White Heron", the concepts of nature and civilization are separated by gender. A young country girl that embraces nature encounters a boy that stands for civilization. The two are as different as night and day, but still find a way to understand one another. The girl is gentle and cares about the creatures, while the boy is aggressive and dangerous. Civilization is seen as something of danger. When I think of nature, i think of being calm and reflecting on things that are caotic. When i think of modern civilization, I think of that caos that people flee to nature to get away from. There is less complications in nature, this does not mean it's beyond difficult to survive in, but it has a sense of calm about it. On the other hand, modern civilization is made up of confusion and a world that is rushed. The wild brings outa sense of lingering in people, while the noises of the cities and technology bring people to a hurry.
