Derek Terrell: Annie Dillard Response #2: Keep your Eyes Open

" Its all a matter of keeping my eyes open. Nature is like one of those line drawings of a tree that are puzzles for a children: Can you find hidden int he leaves a duck, a house, a boy, a bucket, a zebra, and a boot."

When i first read this quote from Annie Dillard, I immediately began to look at the deeper meaning behind it. I"m not sure if this was what she was getting at, but her idea of keeping your eyes open when in the presence of nature appears to like she is targeting the people who aren't aware of the environmental issues. If these people kept there eyes open ,then they would be able to see how much we really depend on nature and the importance of fixing the environmental problems that are present. The second part of the quote made me think of how people obtain certain things from nature as long as they look close enough. In other words everyone gets something different out of nature. Also the idea that nature should be looked at, at every different angle because at first glance it might appear to be something that it isn't, once again the thought of keeping your eyes open is reiterated.
