Adventure therapy is often refferred to as nature therapy or wilderness therapy. This field of therapy has been disigned to help those who are having trouble controlling, expressing, or having emotions and other behavioral and psycololigial funtions. Adventure therapy utilizes nature and the wilderness setting as a means of restructuring, rehabilitating, or habilitating people that struggle in areas of social interaction. These types of programs have been developed to treat the mentally ill, emotionally distressted, substance abusers, sex addicts, and even those with eating disorders.
I have had a friend who participated in a similar program designed as a highschool that allowed him to have a nature structured life, living in the wilderness for an entire semester, and high school creditied classes. He chose to take on this experience to serve as a distraction from his everyday life and to help him cope with the recent loss of his older brother, who he was very close with. After his experience, speaking with him was very different than before. It seemed that reality had hit him hard and he had developed a new found confidence on his journey. He recommended the experience to anyone that wanted to "find themself" and experience nature. His experience confirmed my belief that nature has healing qualities.
