Ben Wiehl - Annie Dillard #1

"I have never understood why so many mystics of all creeds experience the presence of God on mountaintops. Aren't they afraid of being blown away?"

This quote by Annie Dillard confuses me somewhat. I feel that it is easy to see why in many of the worlds religions, individuals have come into contact with their God on mountaintops. A mountaintop is possibly the most remote place you could go to in the world. Here there is nothing save for youself and your thoughts, and the chance to experience something sublime. It is this type of overwhelming experience that drives an individual to contact with the divine. Also, mountains are natural formations in the world that were so large and unexplainable by ancient civilizations that they must have seemed like they were placed their by the Gods themselves. At the top of the mountain is also the closest you could possibly get to the heavens, which is probably one of the main reasons that they sought out that type of place - in order to commune directly with the divine.
