The AT is like a pygmy society that has evolved out of the industrialized American society. People have found a way to live in the wilderness for an extended period of time and not worry about money or the rest of the world. They can care only about what lies in front of them physically. This also gives people time to really care about the people around them. The pygmies in The Forest People relate to them in that they are separated from civilization and society and have some same general values. The pygmies exist because of knowledge passed down generation to generation, they did not join the civilized world. The civilized world can be blinding, and sometimes it just takes a kick in the chest from wilderness (what is ultimately there) to see reality.
