David Hahn, Hidden Creatures!

5/1/08

From Annie Dillard’s Three by Annie Dillard: The Writing Life, an American Childhood, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek

“Under me, directly under the weight of my body on the grass, are other creatures, just as real, for whom also this moment, this tree, is “it.” Take just the top inch of soil, the world squirming right under my palms. In the top inch of forest soil, biologists found ‘an average of 1,356 living creatures present in each square foot, including 865 mites, 265 springtails, 22 millipedes, 19 adult beetles and various numbers of 12 other forms.’” (Dillard, 95)
After reading over this section of Dillard’s book, I just thought to my self “wow”, I had no idea there was that many different living creatures in the ground, or even just in the top inch of soil for that matter! Just from reading over this gave me a greater appreciation of the many different types of creatures we have on the Earth, and the thousands, which I don’t even know existed. After learning about these thousands of hidden creatures, I will have a more open eye for these creatures and others.
