Brien Carr - Experiencing the trail
On the returning walk, coming out from the trail, I chose not to follow the pathway that was paved with mulch and convenient timbers as steps. Instead, I chose to follow a untrodden path that seemed to be established by nature on top of half sunken logs and along the curve of the side of a hill that fell off into the lake. I felt as though I was transcending time, reverting to childhood memories of waking in the morning and running off as soon as I could to go play in the forest of trees behind our home. I began to think as though I once did, imagining myself as the first to walk that land and observing my surroundings as if I were dependent on them for my survival. When I was a child, my brothers, friends, and I built log forts, shelters, and tools out of what we found in the woods. Although these thoughts were returning to me with intense vividness of memory, they were interrupted by my more current somewhat lazy-bodied college physique. I determined then that I must attempt another experience with the trail when I had more time to interact with the surroundings.
