David Comeau: CS Lewis- nature and gods glory

“Nature never taught me that there exists a God of glory and of infinite majesty. I had to learn that in other ways. But nature gave the word glory a meaning for me”
I love this quote by Lewis because it speaks so much to my own life as well. This same idea is echoed by Donald Miller in his book “Through Painted Deserts” as he writes about a road trip he and a friend went on through the U.S. He talks about how sunsets and stars are gifts from God to demonstrate his love for us. It reminds me of how people often refer to God as the “great artist in the sky.” Sunsets have always been a huge testament to me of Gods love and glory. The most amazing thing about sunsets to me is that they are completely different everyday, it makes God seem more personal. Imagine if the sunset were the same magnificent sunset every day. Would it still be seen as magnificent after a month or year of the same thing? I like to think that God creates the sunset everyday and makes it exactly what he wants his people to see that day. Glory also takes on meaning for me in nature. I remember going to the grand canyon with my family my junior year of high school. It was the most incredible I had ever seen. I looked down on it and just could not help but see God’s glory in it all. I knew in my head from church and reading the bible that there was a God of glory and majesty, but that knowledge didn’t move in to my heart until I saw it in nature.
