Berry writes on page 98 of unsettling of America that “the message seems essentially that of the voice of the whirlwind out of the book of Job: the creation is bounteous and mysterious, and humanity is only a part of it—not its equal, much less its master…creation provides a place for humans but it is greater than humanity and within it even great men are small…by understanding accurately his proper place in creation a man may be made whole.”
This quote is extremely bold and confident. I am still debating on how I feel about it. I do agree with the first segment. It is completely true that creation is vast and man is only a tiny part of it and certainly not its master. Creation cannot be tamed by man, we essentially have no say in creation. It is also true that within the bounteous and mysterious creation even great men are small. However I do not know if I believe the last part of this quote: “by understanding accurately his proper place in creation a man may be made whole.” I do believe that man needs to understand his place in creation. He needs to know that he is small and that the world is huge and overwhelming and too much for him to handle. Man needs to know it is sinful and small and insignificant on his own. I believe that for a man to be made whole it has to be by an act of God. So in a sense, if by man knowing his place in creation, he is led to know his God, and surrender himself to the God of creation, he may be made whole. However, I wish that Berry had presented it that way instead of the way he did. For man to be made whole he has to have God make him complete…and It could be argued that part of God’s process of making him complete is humbling him by showing his place in creation and making it so that man has no option but to ask God to complete him.
